Brakel reads on a map as a small, almost circular old town. The line of its former defences survives as a ring of streets. Inside, lanes run towards a central market area, and outside the ring the town spreads more loosely into residential streets and then open countryside.
The town lies in the hilly country of eastern Westphalia, between the Egge hills and the Weser valley. Small streams run through the surrounding valleys, and the roads bend to follow them. Brakel was once a member of the Hanseatic League, which is a notable connection for an inland market town of its size.
