Brive-la-Gaillarde lies in the Corrèze valley, and the shape of its centre is immediately recognisable: an oval of old streets enclosed by a ring of boulevards that follow the line of the former walls. Inside, narrow lanes lead toward the Collégiale Saint-Martin. Outside the ring, avenues radiate into newer districts, and the Corrèze river runs along the southern side through a broad valley.
The town is known as a market centre for the surrounding countryside, and its covered markets remain popular. Brive also hosts one of France's major book fairs, the Foire du livre, each autumn. In sport, its rugby club, CA Brive, has a strong following and won the European Cup in 1997. The Dordogne and Périgord are close.
