Brunssum lies in the south-east of Dutch Limburg, close to the German border. The map shows a town of curving residential streets and planned neighbourhoods, many built for miners and their families in the early 20th century. On its eastern side the dense pattern gives way to the Brunssummerheide, a large area of heath, sand and woodland.
Coal defined the town for decades. The Hendrik state mine operated here until the 1960s, and the colliery settlements still shape much of the layout. Today Brunssum is known internationally as the seat of NATO's Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum.
