Bykhov stands on the Dnieper in Mogilev region, eastern Belarus, south of the city of Mogilev. The town occupies the higher western bank, and the river's broad floodplain stretches away on the opposite side, with meadows, oxbow lakes and channels shaping a very different landscape from the town itself.
Bykhov was a fortified town in the seventeenth century, and its castle, together with a large fortified synagogue of the same era, remains part of its historic centre. The street pattern around the old core is irregular, while later districts follow straighter lines. Roads and a railway lead out toward Mogilev and further south.
