Cachoeira do Arari lies on Marajó, the vast island at the mouth of the Amazon, on the banks of the Arari River. The town stretches along the river, with a small grid of streets set back from the water. Around it the land is flat and low, much of it grassland that floods during the rainy season, crossed by channels and streams.
The eastern part of Marajó is cattle and water-buffalo country, and the region is known for Marajoara pottery made by the island's ancient inhabitants. The town is home to the Museu do Marajó, founded by the Italian priest Giovanni Gallo, which collects the archaeology and daily life of the island.
