Camargo is a municipality directly south of Santander, on the inner shore of the Bay of Santander. It is made up of several towns rather than a single centre, among them Muriedas and Maliaño. On a map, those built-up areas run together along the main roads, with industrial zones and housing between the estuary and the hills.
The waterfront is the most striking part of the plan. Tidal channels and marshland edge the bay, and the Santander airport runway extends into reclaimed land along the shore. Inland, the ground rises into green limestone hills. There, near Escobedo, the Cueva del Pendo holds Palaeolithic paintings that are part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of cave art in northern Spain.
