Cambrai lies on the Escaut, the river known further downstream as the Scheldt, where it meets the Canal de Saint-Quentin. From above the historic centre is clearly marked. A ring of boulevards follows the line of the old fortifications, and inside it the medieval streets meet at the main squares, the cathedral and the belfry.
The town has a long history as a bishop's seat and a place of treaties. It gave its name to the League of Cambrai in 1508. It is also remembered for the Battle of Cambrai in 1917, the first large-scale use of tanks in warfare, and for its mint sweets, the bêtises de Cambrai.
