Candelaria lies in Colombia's Valle del Cauca Department, a short distance east of Cali, on the broad, flat floor of the Cauca River valley. The town has a compact, mostly regular grid of blocks. From above, however, the main story is the countryside, which is divided into large, even plots.
The Valle del Cauca is Colombia's main sugar-producing region, and cane covers much of the land around Candelaria. The fields form a geometric patchwork crossed by farm roads and irrigation lines. The Cauca River runs to the west, and the Andean cordilleras rise on both sides of the valley, though they fall outside a town-scale map.
