Caoqiao is a town in northern Jiangsu, in the lowland country east of Xuzhou. The land here is almost entirely flat and intensively farmed, and the map reflects it. Instead of one continuous built-up area, it shows dozens of small village clusters sitting like dots and dashes across a wide pattern of fields.
The town centre is where these threads come together, in a slightly denser area of streets and buildings along the main roads. From there, country lanes run out in straight lines toward the surrounding villages, often alongside irrigation channels.
