Cardedeu lies in the Vallès Oriental, northeast of Barcelona, on the gentle plain between the coastal range and the Montseny massif. From above, the older centre is a small cluster of irregular streets. Newer neighbourhoods have grown outward from it in looser, more regular blocks, and fields and wooded patches hold the edges before the next town begins.
The railway between Barcelona and Girona runs through the town, which helped Cardedeu grow as a place to live within reach of the city. On the map the line is a firm stroke that divides the town into two unequal halves. The streets on either side bend to meet the few crossings, which gives the plan a distinctive pinch in the middle.
