Carei lies in Satu Mare County in north-western Romania, close to the border with Hungary, on the flat land at the edge of the Great Hungarian Plain. From above, the town has a fairly compact shape. The town is best known for the Károlyi Castle, a former residence of the Károlyi family, one of the most influential noble families in the region.
