Carlos Barbosa sits in the highlands of Rio Grande do Sul, in the part of the Serra Gaúcha shaped by Italian immigrant settlement. From above, the town has no strict grid. Its streets follow the land, climbing ridges, curling around slopes and dropping into small valleys, so the centre looks like a loose knot of lines with farm roads leading out to the hills.
The town is known well beyond its size for two things. It is the home of Tramontina, the maker of kitchenware and tools, whose industrial sites show up as larger, regular blocks set against the finer street pattern. It is also a strong name in Brazilian futsal, thanks to a local club with a long record of national and international titles.
