Cascina lies in the lower Arno valley, between Pisa and Florence, on land so flat that its roads can run straight for kilometres. The historic centre follows a clear rectangular plan, with a principal street crossing it lengthwise and lined by porticoes. Around this orderly core, later districts, industrial zones and scattered frazioni spread across the plain in a looser, more open pattern.
The Arno runs just to the north of the town, its wide bends and embankments forming the most expressive curve on the map. Drainage ditches and country lanes divide the surrounding farmland into long strips, a pattern that reflects centuries of working wet ground.
