Celbridge lies in County Kildare, west of Dublin, on the banks of the River Liffey. From above, the town is organised around its main street, which runs down to a bridge over the river, with newer residential estates spreading out on both sides and large areas of historic parkland shaping its edges.
A Celbridge map poster shows this layering clearly. The old centre follows the main street and the river, while the estate of Castletown House extends to the east, with its long tree-lined avenue and open grounds. The Liffey winds through the area in gentle curves, and later housing developments fill the land to the north and south.
Castletown House, built in the early 18th century, is regarded as the first large Palladian house in Ireland and is now open to the public. Celbridge is also associated with Jonathan Swift and Esther Vanhomrigh, the Vanessa of his poetry, who lived at Celbridge Abbey on the river.
