Cergy lies northwest of Paris in the Val-d'Oise, beside a broad meander of the Oise river. It is the heart of Cergy-Pontoise, one of the new towns (villes nouvelles) created from the late 1960s to absorb the growth of the Paris region, and its map shows it. Districts are laid out as separate units, access roads loop, and large green spaces were set aside.
Inside the river loop, former gravel pits have become a chain of lakes at the Île de loisirs de Cergy-Pontoise, a large leisure park that appears on the map as a series of irregular water shapes. The Oise curves around them. The old village of Cergy sits close to the banks, in contrast to the modern neighbourhoods on the slopes above.
The Axe Majeur, a monumental landscape work by the artist Dani Karavan, runs in a straight line from the heights of Cergy toward the river and beyond. It is a rare artwork that can be seen at map scale. A Cergy map poster follows these planned lines, the river curve and the lakes, along with the railway that carries the RER A toward Paris.

Former gravel pits now form a cluster of lakes inside the river loop. On the map they appear as bold, irregular water shapes beside the modern districts.
Axe Majeur
This straight monumental axis runs down from a semicircular square toward the Oise. Its precise line cuts across the curves of the town and is clearly visible from above.
