Chakradharpur is in the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, in the hilly, wooded Kolhan region of eastern India. The town is best known as the headquarters of the Chakradharpur division of the South Eastern Railway, and the railway shapes its map more than anything else. Broad sets of tracks, yards and railway colonies occupy a large part of the town.
On one side of the tracks the older bazaar area has narrow, uneven streets. On the other, railway housing is set out in more regular blocks, a pattern common to Indian railway towns. Roads leave the centre in several directions towards the surrounding villages and the mining and forest country beyond.
