Chambersburg is the county seat of Franklin County, in south-central Pennsylvania, set in the broad Cumberland Valley. Its centre follows a regular grid that meets at a central square, where the main streets cross. Conococheague Creek winds through the town, and its looping course breaks up the straight lines of the grid.
The town has a well-known place in American history. In July 1864, Confederate cavalry burned much of Chambersburg, and it remains the only northern town largely destroyed during the Civil War. The rebuilt downtown still keeps its historic layout. Wilson College lies on the northern side of town, with a campus that follows the creek.
