Chāndor, also known as Chandwad, lies in the north of Nashik district in Maharashtra, at the foot of the Satmala range. The town grew beside a historic route through these hills that is now the Mumbai–Agra highway. On the map the highway forms a clear line past the town, and the older streets cluster in a compact centre close to the slopes.
The hills dominate the landscape. A hill fort stands above the town, and the Renuka Devi temple is built into the rock nearby. In the eighteenth century Chāndor was associated with the Holkar rulers, and a Holkar palace known as the Rang Mahal still stands in the town.
