Chaska lies southwest of Minneapolis on the Minnesota River, and the map shows two very different layers. The older town sits on the valley floor, a compact grid around a central square. The bluffs and uplands above fill with the looping cul-de-sacs, ponds and parkways of later suburban growth.
In the nineteenth century the town was known for brickmaking, which drew on clay deposits in the river valley. Cream-coloured Chaska brick appears in buildings across the region. Today Chaska is also the seat of Carver County and home to Hazeltine National Golf Club, which hosted the 2016 Ryder Cup and several major championships.
