Chatham Island Map Poster & Print
Chatham Island is known as Rēkohu to Moriori and Wharekauri to Māori. It lies roughly 800 kilometres east of New Zealand's South Island and is the largest island in the Chatham group. Water dominates its map. Te Whanga Lagoon spreads across much of the interior, leaving a ring of land with long beaches and a higher, more rugged south.
Few people live here. Waitangi, the main township, sits on a bay on the west coast, and a handful of roads link small communities and farms across the island. The Chathams keep their own time, 45 minutes ahead of mainland New Zealand. Because they lie so close to the date line, they are among the first inhabited places to see each new day.
