Chaville lies west of Paris in Hauts-de-Seine, on the historic route between the capital and Versailles. Its map has a very clear shape. The town stretches along a narrow valley, with the main avenue running through the bottom and residential streets climbing the slopes on either side. The Forest of Meudon covers the high ground to the south, and the Forest of Fausses-Reposes covers the high ground to the north.
That forest frame makes Chaville unusually green for a suburb so close to Paris. On the map, the built-up area forms a long band pressed between two large masses of woodland, with paths winding through the trees and small ponds scattered across them.
