Chengalpattu lies about 55 kilometres south-west of central Chennai, along the Grand Southern Trunk Road. From above, the town's streets gather between road and railway, with the wide water surface of Kolavai Lake on its eastern side. Rocky hills rise from the surrounding plain. To the south, the broad, sandy bed of the Palar River crosses the district.
Chengalpattu is an important railway junction on routes to Chennai, Arakkonam and the south. It has been the headquarters of its own district since that district was separated from Kanchipuram in 2019. The town once had a fort that played a part in the colonial wars of the Carnatic. Today its medical college and government offices make it a regional centre.
