Chenzhou lies in the far south of Hunan, close to the border with Guangdong, where the Nanling mountains begin to rise. The city does not spread across an open plain. It fills the valleys between hills, so its map shows districts stretched along river courses and main roads, with blank green shapes of higher ground between them.
In the middle of town, Suxian Hill rises as a wooded island surrounded by streets. It is a scenic area tied to local legend and long visited by travellers.
