Chishtian lies in Bahawalnagar district, in the flat southern part of Punjab where canals shape the landscape as much as roads do. On the map, long straight watercourses and field boundaries run across the countryside at clean angles, and the town sits among them as a denser patch of streets and building footprints.
The town takes its name from the Chishti Sufi order. It is associated with the shrine of Baba Tajuddin Chishti, which remains a focus for pilgrims. Around it, farming depends on the canal network that has turned this edge of the Punjab plain into productive ground.
