Chunskiy lies in the west of Irkutsk Oblast, deep in the Siberian taiga. Like many towns in the region, it grew around the railway, and the map shows that clearly. The tracks and station area form a strong line, and the residential streets are laid out in blocks on either side.
The Chuna river flows near the settlement and bends through the forest. The land around the town is mostly dense woodland, cut by clearings, forest roads and the straight corridors of the railway and power lines. Timber has long been at the centre of the local economy, and sawmill and yard areas appear on the map as large open blocks.
