Cibitoke is the main town of the province of the same name, in the northwest of Burundi. It lies close to the Rusizi plain, the lowland along the river that forms the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. To the east the ground rises towards the highlands, so the town occupies a position between flat farmland and hilly country.
On the map, Cibitoke is a small town with a modest network of streets around its centre, and roads leading out towards the border crossings, Bujumbura to the south and the hills inland. The surrounding plain is used for farming, and streams from the highlands cut across it on their way to the Rusizi.
