Ciénaga de Oro is a town in the department of Córdoba, in the lowland plains of northern Colombia. Its name, meaning golden swamp, points to the landscape around it: flat savanna, seasonal wetlands and pasture, crossed by roads that link the town with Montería, Sahagún and other settlements across the department.
From above the town is organised around a regular pattern of blocks, a legacy of Spanish colonial planning that placed a central square with streets set out around it. The grid loosens towards the edges, where newer neighbourhoods meet open fields. In the rainy season, water collects in low-lying areas nearby, which gives the surrounding map its scattered shapes.
