Clayton is in Johnston County, North Carolina, a short drive southeast of Raleigh. The town grew up along the North Carolina Railroad in the nineteenth century, and its older centre still follows that line, with a straight main street and a modest grid of blocks on either side. In recent decades it has become one of the faster-growing commuter towns around the Triangle region.
The map records that growth plainly. Around the compact downtown, subdivisions spread out with the curving streets and cul-de-sacs typical of newer American suburbs, while US 70 and its bypass carry traffic toward Raleigh. Interstate 40 passes to the west, and the Neuse River runs along the edge of town, lined with greenway trail and patches of woodland.
