Cobourg sits on the north shore of Lake Ontario, roughly midway between Toronto and Kingston, in Northumberland County. The town's map is organised around the lake: the downtown grid runs to the water, where a harbour and marina are protected by piers, and a long sandy beach stretches east of the harbour.
King Street forms the main commercial axis, running east–west through downtown, and Victoria Hall, the town's grand nineteenth-century town hall, stands near its centre.
