Collado-Villalba lies northwest of Madrid, where the plain starts to rise toward the Sierra de Guadarrama. From above, the town is shaped by its transport lines. The A-6 motorway runs past on its way to the mountain passes, and railway tracks cross the town and split toward Segovia and Ávila.
The town grew around this junction. Its older core sits between the tracks, and newer housing spreads outward in curving residential streets. Toward the sierra the grid loosens into scrub, granite outcrops and scattered estates, and the contour of the land becomes more visible in the road layout.
