Colne sits on a ridge in the Pendle district of east Lancashire. The ridge gives the town its shape. The main street follows the high ground roughly east to west, and rows of terraced houses run down the slopes on either side. On a map they look like fine, closely spaced parallel lines, a pattern typical of Lancashire's textile towns.
Colne is where several routes end. The M65 motorway finishes at its western edge, and the East Lancashire railway line from Preston ends at the town's station. To the north the Leeds and Liverpool Canal passes near Foulridge, and beyond the last streets open moorland rises toward the Yorkshire border.
