Conversano sits on a low hill in the countryside south-east of Bari, in Apulia. From above, the old town is a tight oval of narrow streets at the highest point, with the castle and cathedral at its centre. Newer neighbourhoods spread out around it in a more regular pattern, and roads leave in all directions across the countryside.
The town is known for its Norman castle, its Romanesque cathedral and the Benedictine monastery of San Benedetto.
