Córdoba sits on the north bank of the Guadalquivir River in Andalusia. On a map the old city forms a dense knot of narrow, winding streets inside the line of its former walls, while the river curves along its southern edge. Beyond the historic core, newer districts spread outward in more regular blocks.
In the tenth century Córdoba was the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate of al-Andalus and one of the largest cities in Europe. Its Great Mosque, later converted into a cathedral, still stands near the river. The Roman bridge crosses the Guadalquivir in front of it, linking the old city to the south bank.
