Courbevoie lies just west of Paris in Hauts-de-Seine, on the left bank of a wide bend in the Seine. The map shows two worlds side by side. One is the dense network of narrow streets, squares and apartment blocks in the older town. The other is the large-scale grid of La Défense, the business district that Courbevoie shares with its neighbour Puteaux.
La Défense is built on a huge raised platform, or dalle, that continues the historic axis running from the Louvre through the Arc de Triomphe.
