Cranford is a township in Union County, New Jersey, about twenty miles west of Manhattan. On the map, the Rahway River is its defining feature, winding in tight loops through the centre of town with parkland along its banks. Tree-lined residential streets fill the surrounding area, and a compact downtown sits beside the railway station.
The river's many bends and its canoe club have earned Cranford the nickname 'the Venice of New Jersey'. The town grew as a railroad suburb, and the Raritan Valley Line still carries commuters toward Newark and New York. County parkland runs along much of the riverbank.
