Crystal Lake takes its name from the body of water inside its limits, and on a map the lake is the first thing you notice: a smooth, rounded shape on a background of curving residential streets. Further from the water the streets loosen into cul-de-sacs, school grounds and open green space, typical of the towns in McHenry County northwest of Chicago.
A Metra commuter line runs diagonally through the city, and the older downtown sits beside it in a compact block of short, regular streets. That line has shaped the town for generations, tying it to Chicago while the neighbourhoods kept spreading outward.
