Custódia is a municipality in the interior of Pernambuco, in the semi-arid sertão of northeastern Brazil. The town itself is compact, a group of blocks gathered along the main road, while the municipality around it extends across wide stretches of dry land. On a map the settlement looks like a small, dense cluster set within a very large, quiet space.
The landscape is caatinga: scrub and low vegetation adapted to long dry seasons and irregular rain. Water is managed through reservoirs and small dams, and these shapes, where they appear, are among the few natural outlines interrupting the open ground.
