Dehradun lies in the Doon Valley, a broad, gently sloping basin with the outer Himalaya to the north and the lower Shivalik range to the south. The Ganga flows to the east and the Yamuna to the west, and the city sits between them on rising ground. On a map it spreads north toward the mountains, and the roads thin out as the slopes steepen.
The centre is organised around the Clock Tower, and main roads radiate outward from it. Rajpur Road climbs north toward the hill station of Mussoorie. Seasonal streams such as the Rispana and Bindal cut shallow valleys through the neighbourhoods. Dehradun serves as the capital of Uttarakhand, and many government offices cluster along its central avenues.
