Deyang lies on the northern part of the Chengdu Plain in Sichuan, a short journey northeast of Chengdu. The terrain is almost completely flat, and the city's plan takes advantage of it: long straight avenues, large rectangular blocks and a river running through the centre, lined with parks. Beyond the built-up area the landscape turns to fields crossed by irrigation channels and roads.
Deyang is best known in China as a centre of heavy equipment manufacturing, home to major producers of power generation machinery. Within its jurisdiction lies Guanghan, site of Sanxingdui, where bronze masks and figures from an ancient Shu culture reshaped understanding of early Chinese civilisation. Parts of the prefecture were also struck hard by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.
