Dolgoprudnyy lies just beyond Moscow's northern border, and from above its most striking features are water. The Moscow Canal runs along the town and widens into reservoirs with irregular shorelines, while a railway line to the capital crosses the built-up area. Between them are blocks of Soviet and modern housing, green courtyards and forest edges.
The town was founded in the 1930s as a centre for airship construction, and that history remains part of its identity. Today it is best known as home to the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, the university known as Phystech. Its campus is a clearly defined area of academic buildings and dormitories on the map.
