Dolynska is in Kirovohrad oblast, in central Ukraine, a region of broad, fertile steppe. The town developed as a railway junction, and on the map rail lines are one of its most prominent features. They pass through the urban area and continue in long straight lines across the surrounding fields.
The land here is almost flat and heavily farmed. The streets form a fairly regular grid with low houses and gardens. The larger fields around the town are divided by long shelterbelts and farm tracks, which give the countryside a geometric order almost as strong as the town's.
