Dongyang lies in the Jinhua region of central Zhejiang, in a basin framed by low hills. The Dongyang River flows westward through the city, and the urban area has grown along both of its banks, with bridges tying the older core to newer districts. On a map the river is the clear spine, while ridges and valleys close in around the edges of the built-up area.
The city is known across China for Dongyang woodcarving, a centuries-old craft of carved panels, furniture and architectural details. Dongyang has also long been associated with builders and craftsmen. The town of Hengdian, within its boundaries, is home to one of the largest film studio complexes in the country, where many period dramas are shot.
