Drensteinfurt lies in the Münsterland, south of Münster, in flat, green countryside of scattered farms and hedgerows. The small Werse river runs through the town, and the historic centre developed near it. The town's best-known landmark is Haus Steinfurt, a moated manor house surrounded by water and trees near the old centre.
From above, the old centre is a compact knot of short streets around the church. Residential areas spread out from it in all directions, laid out in the curving streets and cul-de-sacs typical of postwar German towns. A railway line crosses the area, and outside town the Münsterland farm pattern takes over: individual farmsteads, winding lanes and small wooded patches.
