Drunen lies in North Brabant, just west of 's-Hertogenbosch, in the municipality of Heusden. On the north side of the map, the landscape is typical Dutch lowland: flat fields, drainage ditches and straight roads heading toward the Maas. The town's streets form a compact centre with residential neighbourhoods laid out in tidy, planned blocks around it.
To the south the scene changes completely. The Loonse en Drunense Duinen is a national park of shifting sand dunes and woodland, one of the largest areas of drift sand in Western Europe. On a map it appears as a large open space bordered by forest paths, a striking blank beside the dense town.
