Dukli lies in West Tripura district, in the far northeast of India, close to the state capital Agartala. From above, it is a patchwork of residential lanes and small neighbourhoods. The settlement has grown along a few main roads, and between them the ground is broken up by ponds, trees and cultivated plots.
Tripura's landscape is shaped by low hills and wide valleys, and Dukli shows this in its uneven layout. The streets rarely run straight for long. Instead, they follow the land and the edges of older fields. Many houses sit around small ponds, a common feature in this part of India.
