Dumka is the headquarters of the Santhal Pargana division and the sub-capital of Jharkhand. On a map the town is compact: a knot of streets around its administrative core, with main roads leaving in several directions toward Bhagalpur, Deoghar and the Bengal border. Offices, schools and open compounds give the centre a looser grain than an old market town would have.
The surrounding country is rolling and partly wooded, part of the eastern rim of the Chota Nagpur plateau. To the south-east the Mayurakshi River is held back by the Massanjore Dam, whose reservoir is one of the district's best-known sights. The town is also home to Sido Kanhu Murmu University, named after leaders of the Santhal rebellion of 1855.
