Dzerzhinsky lies just southeast of Moscow, beyond the MKAD ring road, on the left bank of the Moskva River. On a map it is compact. Its residential blocks sit between the river, which forms its southern edge, and the major roads leading into the capital. Industrial areas and a large power plant appear as broad, regular shapes nearby.
The town grew around the Nikolo-Ugreshsky Monastery, which tradition says was founded by Prince Dmitry Donskoy in the fourteenth century. In the Soviet period the monastery was used as a labour commune named after Felix Dzerzhinsky, and the town later took his name.
