East Florence is the eastern part of Florence, in northwestern Alabama, in the area known as the Shoals. The Tennessee River flows to the south, and the wider area includes Muscle Shoals, Sheffield and Tuscumbia. On a map, East Florence has an older, relatively regular street grid, which reflects its origins as a separate industrial settlement before it became part of Florence.
Along the main roads, older commercial buildings and houses sit in blocks that have changed little over the decades. Further out, the grid gives way to newer suburban streets. The Tennessee River and its broad reservoirs dominate the region, and the Shoals is famous for its music history, including the recording studios in Muscle Shoals and Florence as the birthplace of W. C. Handy.
