East Grinstead sits on a ridge in West Sussex, near the borders with Surrey and Kent. Its historic core is the High Street, lined with timber-framed buildings, some dating to the fourteenth century. Nearby stands Sackville College, a Jacobean almshouse. From above, the old town is a narrow strip along the ridge, with twentieth-century housing spreading out on the slopes around it.
The town is known for the Queen Victoria Hospital, where surgeon Archibald McIndoe treated badly burned airmen during the Second World War. His patients formed the Guinea Pig Club, and the town's support for them is remembered locally. South of the town, the land opens towards Ashdown Forest and the Weir Wood Reservoir.
