Emin is the seat of Emin County in Tacheng Prefecture, in the far northwest of Xinjiang near the border with Kazakhstan. The town lies on an open plain with mountain ranges on the horizon. The Emin River flows west past it toward Lake Alakol across the border, and on a map it forms the main natural line through a very spare landscape.
The town itself is compact and laid out with wide, straight streets, and irrigated fields spread around it in regular plots. Beyond the farmland, the map empties quickly into steppe and foothills, with only a few roads and watercourses crossing the open ground. The result is a small, clearly defined grid in a large space.
